Amherst’s Civil Rights and Title IX Office
T itle IX—part of a 1972 federal education law—prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sexual harassment and sexual violence are forms of sex discrimination. Amherst College is committed to providing an environment free from discrimination, and harassment based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Maureen Holland is currently serving as the Interim Director of Civil Rights and Title IX Coordinator at Amherst College.
She comes to Amherst from Cozen O’Connor, a highly regarded legal firm specializing in Title IX and related work and with whom the College has worked previously. She works with schools to design and implement programs and initiatives that integrate the complex federal and state regulatory framework with the unique dynamics of sexual and gender-based harassment and the impacts of interpersonal violence on individuals and communities. She also provides hands-on assistance in writing policies and procedures, conducting investigations, and developing and delivering training programs. Maureen has served as the interim Title IX director at other educational institutions and will ensure that the College’s office continues to provide the strongest support for members of our community.
